Community Health Systems, Inc. (NYSE:CYH) ("CHS") and Health Management Associates, Inc. (NYSE:HMA) ("HMA") announced today that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement pursuant to which CHS will acquire HMA for approximately $7.6 billion, including the assumption of approximately $3.7 billion of indebtedness. When completed, CHS would own or operate approximately 206 hospitals in 29 states with a total bed count of over 31,000.
Community Health Systems is a holding company. Through its subsidiaries, Co. operates general acute care hospitals and outpatient facilities in communities across the country. Co. healthcare services through the hospitals and outpatient facilities that it owns and operates in generally larger non-urban markets and selected urban markets throughout the U.S. Co. provides range of general and hospital healthcare services and outpatient services to patients. Services provided through Co.'s hospitals and outpatient facilities include general acute care, emergency room, general and other surgery, critical care, internal medicine, obstetrics, diagnostic, psychiatric and rehabilitation services.
