MAA (NYSE: MAA) announced that at its special meeting held today, shareholders overwhelmingly approved the proposed merger with Colonial Properties Trust, pursuant to the definitive merger agreement dated June 3, 2013. Approximately 87% of the outstanding shares of MAA common stock voted with respect to the proposed merger, with approximately 99% of the votes cast in favor of the proposed merger.
Mid-America Apartment Communities is a multifamily-focused, self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust. Co. owns, operates, acquires and selectively develops apartment communities primarily located in the Southeast, Southwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S. Co. maintaines full or partial ownership of various apartment communities across several states and the District of Columbia. Co.'s business is conducted principally through its subsidiary, Mid-America Apartments, L.P. (the Operating Partnership). Co. is the sole general partner of the Operating Partnership.
